Review of The Art of Getting By (2011) by Haoyang Z — 17 Jun 2011
To all those without a soul, those who live life as if in a dream, those who trudge on with their daily toils because they must, those who do not live life with intent, and those who rated this film poorly I say "go to hell".
This movie was a true gem. It was like watching my own soul tell a story and it was a sad but true story. It was about life, and what is not life. It made me want to cry but I couldn't cry. Because it was what life was made of and it forces one to sit through it clenching one's teeth without ever showing enough emotion or pain to let others know of one's true self.
It was presented simply as it is in life, just simply. No artificiality, just the truth.
Gavin Wiesen, a name to remember.
PS: To all the critics out there who thinks Freddie Highmore's performance was underwhelming: Get a fucking clue. This movie was about apathy. Not ever performance must be over the top drama in order to have depth. In the words of his character, George Zinavoy, "I like layers".
