Review of The Apostle (1997) by Linda K — 11 Nov 2007
Someone I discussed this with said, "Too much preaching!" If you listen to his preaching, you see what a transformation he is undergoing in the course of the movie. Unfortunately, though, (in Australia, at least) suspicion of an unfamiliarity with the Pentecostal style combines with anti-religious bias to prevent many from grappling with this work.
A brilliant movie, made for Duvall. Every detail says something about the character of Sonny.
It avoids caricatures, reveals Sonny as a real and flawed human being and, more than being about sin and redemption, it is about God's never-ending grace in those who believe; a grace which conquers our sin, pride and foolishness.
It would have spoilt the movie had Sonny escaped his punishment; but it ended with him a true apostle in chains, ministering among those who served out their punishment with him.
Should be compulsory viewing!
