Review of The Apostle (1997) by Patrick F — 31 Aug 2010
Religion and characters living in the south of the United States have become stereotypes piled on top of more stereotypes in movies. 'The Apostle' is a movie that deals with both in such an honest way and its so refreshing to see.
The character of Sonny is so fascinating and complicated. A human being that is full of flaws like us all but wants to earn redemption for his sins. The scenes of Duvall talking, preaching, singing or thinking about Jesus have an authenticity to them that is mindblowing.
For my money this is Duvall's greatest achievement in his film career.
