In 1960, Billy Wilder was already examining the dark side of prosperous postwar America, not with moralizing drama, but with black comedy. In "The Apartment," Jack Lemmon's likeable but lonely C.
C. Baxter learns that being a nice guy is not the same thing as being a good man. Wilder must have pushed the boundaries of his day with his witty and frank (especially for the time) treatment of adultery and suicide, as well as his caustic portrayal of corruption in the office.
