Review of The Apartment (1960) by Simon G — 26 Oct 2009
Clever and trenchant satire of corruption, exploitation and manipulation in the world of corporate ladder-climbing and back-scratching. Lemmon is as great as ever and it's hard not to love his nice guy character, despite the apparent spinelessness.
Can get a little tiny bit boring in places though. And the moment when Baxter finally tells his boss to go jump in a lake isn't really preceded by any great dramatic crisis point: he just suddenly decides he's had enough, which felt unrealistic, and like Wilder was just trying to wind the whole thing up, something he maybe should have started doing twenty minutes earlier.
Despite that, lovable and charming.
