Review of The Apartment (1960) by Me C — 10 Apr 2010
This movie was perfectly cast. I adored Jack Lemmon in this and how he fell for Shirley MacLaine's character, Fran. She was an elevator operator where he also worked as an Insurance Accountant. He played his part well and always denied himself first as he loaned out evenings of fun at his Central Park Apartment to the dirty dog company managers.
He portrayed as an unselfish quick thinker who ended up rescuing Fran from their firm's CEO who was using Fran and destroying her. as CEO's deceptions are famously known to do. Fred MacMurray notoriously played the role of the CEO at an Insurance company in the busy era of the early 60s in downtown Manhattan.
The Christmas party was a higgledy-piggledy harlequinade hash so typical of the hanky panky in those days. At this party, the leading couple swam though their tears at the painful revelations in this scene as the truth gets unwrapped. Jack's character's fantasy is hilarious about his desire to wear a new bowler to celebrate his promotion and t'was a veneration of an era gone by for men. Seeing him wear the hat struck me with just how cute, funny and hansom he was in his youth.
The last scene of Fran's awakening of her real love for him was a rewarding treat to see. from a New York City New Year's Eve party with Fred MacMurray's character, to an escape and run for it, if it's a not to late dash by Fran.
At the top of the stairs and at the open door of his apartment with his fresh bottle uncorked for their future new year, this movie's ending left me feeling all refreshed and bubbly inside.
The Apartment won an Oscar for best picture!
