Review of The Apartment (1960) by Christian W — 30 Aug 2011
This film is comedy done right, where the laughs justifiably deconstruct the lack of moral accountability surrounding C.C. Baxter's apartment and the slimeballs who make advantageous use of it. Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine are both pitch perfect in their roles, striking the peak of their character's inherited hilariousness (Baxter's socially-inverted tool, Fran's broken down woman), yet never going over the top to the point that their character's become shrill archetypes.
If the film's flow does falter, it's during it's middle half, where the film slows in pacing and favors dramatic character development over the fast paced set pieces that comprise the first and last thirds of the film.
But it's something you really can't gripe about, as it goes a long way in giving this superb comedy a very human touch.
