Review of The Apartment (1960) by Jack G — 26 Nov 2013
Aside from it being one of the major triumphs of Lemmons, Wilder and MacLanes careers, I have to think without this Mad Men wouldn't exist (even if it isn't advertising it's the same man-centered world where women become objects) - it's also like that show a truly Feminist object, it pops out as a story where this character feels real and has a real conflict that extends to the real world.
Ironic that Mr. Neff in double indemnity is back again only much worse. May be this would be what happened if Keys didn't catch him.
But yeah, can't stress enough how great Lemmon is here, a performance that starts kinda bumbling and everyman-like, and scene by scene shows how devastated he really is. its not just about love and relationships, it's about how people can't really get on in the modern world all that well, certainly not when it's filled with all those rows of desks.
