Review of The Animatrix (2003) by Joe W — 12 Sep 2012
The term "Direct to video" means "crap", but this one is very well done. I think only Flight of the Osiris was released theatrically. The other ones were shown on TV just when the Matrix sequels were released. My favourite short is the Second Renaissance. It's the sort of thing that'll make you go "Oh, now I get it. I understand now." Runners up are Kid's Story, Program and Beyond. The animation style in Kid's Story may not be for everyone. It sort of reminds me of English books you'd get in Primary School. I don't know why but I like it in a strange way.
I'm only giving this a four star because I didn't like the episode Matriculated. The animation's great but it feels so sluggish. I tried to like this episode, but after several viewings, I can't help but feel bored by it.
Overall, this'll please Matrix fans, unlike the sequels.
