Review of The Angry Birds Movie (2016) by Andy R — 26 May 2016
Another attempt by Sony to launch an animated franchise out of an existing property, in this case Angry Birds and all of the App shannigans that go with it, hoping to cash in on the absurd success no doubt of titles like The Lego Movie, or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, weird films that should have no chance of succeeding given its arc and the absurdity of it.
And unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it, Angry Birds is a misfire. Not a huge one by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn't add any real complexity or heart to the proceedings outside of a basic structure of the Birds having to get vengence against a invading force of pigs who stole their eggs for food, and relying on the unfortunate type of humour that revolves alot of toilet humor or adult situations that don't translate well to the really wee ones and are often inappropriate considering despite it being based off an app,m will make up a lot of the core audience with it being an animated title.
Spent a lot of time rolling my eyes and looking for more heart or connection which unfortunately with the exception of one or two moments, this one lacked. C'eat la vie.
