Review of The Angry Birds Movie (2016) by Latrice T — 30 May 2016
The Angry Birds Movie stars Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Danny McBride, and it's based off of the popular phone game application. There isn't much to the game (essentially Crash the Castle, but with birds), and that lack of substance transfers to the screen adaptation.
Basically, a happy village of flightless birds welcomes a colony of pigs to their island, but the pigs steal their eggs. The only one who was suspicious was Red, the only angry bird on the island, so it's up to him to save the eggs.
There are some cool things about this movie. The best part is the incredible graphics. This might be one of the prettiest animated movies to date - so much detail is put into each feather on our flightless friends.
Also, Sudeikis does a great job in the lead role, and most of the supporting cast is solid as well. Keegan-Michael Key, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph stand out. Sadly, this is where the positives end.
The jokes are poorly written; they try to include some humor adults would find funny, but it's a swing-and-a-miss every time. Kids will enjoy the slapstick, though. Also, the worst part of this movie is the message it conveys.
They try to write it off as "having faith in yourself," but what really happens is that the one angry bird convinces the happy town to get angry and fight back against the pigs. Is that really a message kids should be given? I say no.
If you have kids and they won't stop begging you to take them to this, I get it. However, if you have any integrity as a fan of film, please don't indulge this obvious cash-grab. Just go see Zootopia again.
