Review of The Angry Birds Movie (2016) by Lauren S — 30 May 2016
The long waited arrival of one of the most successful apps of all time is finally here. We find out the background and the reason of why those birds are so angry at the pigs.
The film stars Jason Sudeikis as Red who is somewhat of a loner. He's grumpy, he's mean, and most of all he's angry. After being sentenced to appear in anger management class we come across the characters of Chuck and Bomb.
Shortly after attending, some mysterious pigs arrive on the island. From the start, anyone who has played the game knows that there attentions aren't good. The pigs end up being chiefs and crooks and its up to Red, Chuck, and Bomb 3 unlikely heroes to save the day.
While most of the comedy does fall flat, there are some moments that made me laugh out loud. Sudeikis does the most with what he can playing Red, but his character just isn't all that interesting. At times I even found myself rooting against of him just because of his sheer annoyance. Josh Gad plays a hyper loud mouth annoying Chuck who bothered me the entire movie. He wasn't funny or did anything to make the movie better. Danny McBride had his moments playing Bomb.
My favorite had to be the mighty eagle played by the great Peter Dinklage. I laughed the most at his character and he in someways really saved the movie. As far as the animation goes, its brilliant. There are some really good shots and scenery throughout. The writing was a hit and miss. Plot holes aside, the writers managed to pull off a pretty good climax and ending, while predictable, was also satisfying.
I don't know what the intentions were when making the Angry Birds Movie. Was it to make money? Or was it to try and make the app relevant again? Either way as soon as I got home I redownloaded the app and i'm sure that will consume most of my life for the next couple months.
