Review of The American President (1995) by Cal ( — 05 May 2008
Memorable, charming romantic comedy that is both entertaining and appealing. The President of the United States, Andrew Shepherd (Douglas), is a widower concerned with his immense popularity levels as an election approaches.
The environmentalists are concerned with changes in emissions of green house gases, and hire a smart political lobbyist named Sydney Ellen Wade (Bening). After meeting Sydney, Andrew strikes up a relationship with her and as a result this relationship jeopardises Andrew's popularity level.
The performances are all very good, with Douglas delivering a fine performance. The script is very intelligently written and showcases some very intriguing characters. The score for the film is also a great touch, with very patriotic music played throughout.
It's hard to explain the appeal of this gem of a movie, but the combination of a great script made better with remarkable performances is exceptional. The ending felt a tad incomplete though. It's interesting that Douglas' take on the President is nice, caring, honourable and doesn't lie.
If only!
