Review of The American Astronaut (2001) by Brent M — 07 Aug 2010
Very bizarre punk rockabilly space opera set in a black and white Jules Verne like future universe. It impresses with it's multi-level contrast of retro and future concepts. It also bewilders with it's quirky and insane characters from utterly creepy insane Professor Hess to "it's Pat" Eddy the bartender punk rocker. There's also interesting male/female sexism and separatism. With almost a Brave New World context; most men live as workers or in the fringe of society and women are a mythical luxury that live on Venus as a possible Heaven like reward. It's just an amazing mash of prior movie concepts that are blended and spiced to produce a very unique concept. The high contrast black and white highlights the tone marvelously.
Consider thus movie if you liked cowboy bebop, brave new world, rocky horror picture show.
