Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Christian L — 11 Feb 2015

Okay, I have been too generous to this film before but now, it really deserves the bashing from me. At first, I enjoyed it. Multiple viewings later, I found some problems. And now I found boatload of problems.

This film lacks continuity from the first one where they forgot the ending where Peter Parker broke his promise to Gwen's father for an example (and in the first act mind you). The introductions to the new characters, especially the villains, are beyond forced (mainly to setup a Sinister Six film).

There was no build up or development for Electro as the main villain. Electro was out in Times Square, he gets hated by civilians, Spider-Man gets the love and attention, and he gets pissed off by that.

Oh, boo hoo! Grow up, guy! The whole world doesn't revolve around you! That part escalated too quickly I have to say. Green Goblin was thrown in at the last minute to setup Gwen's death scene.

The buildup for Harry Osborn to become the Green Goblin is also confusing. So he needs Spider-Man's blood to help cure him? What's in his blood that can help him? Why did Spider-Man not give him his blood? I know it's common for superheroes to keep people alive but can you give us a demonstration other than saying death by science!? And for that matter, doesn't Oscorp have a team of expert scientists that will work his blood into a cure?! Think, writers! THINK!!! And Rhino, what a miserable sack of crap! He is the very definition of a throw away villain.

We didn't even see the whole fight with him and Spidey. All it is, start fight, end credits. That is cheap!!! Yeah, this movie really sucks! It is indeed worse than Spider-Man 3! Give it some credit, I at least knew what was going on in that film despite giving us three villains (and I remembered who they are).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a clustered up mess, it fails on its narrative structure, and is the worst Spider-Man film I've ever seen! It's one of the worst comic book/superhero movies I've ever seen as well as one of the worst films I've seen in general! I don't care if the actors give out good performances, I don't care if the music sounds good, and I don't care if the visuals look awesome! This movie fails as a story! Boy, am I glad Sony gave Spidey to Disney and Marvel Studios for him to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
