Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Danny O — 07 Jul 2015
This Spider-Man sequel has already killed any hopes of a new franchise. The effects are great, and Hans Zimmer's score is pretty fitting with the movie. Garfield is great as Spider-Man, and his chemistry with Emma Stone is very believable.
But the love story takes up way to much of an already overlong movie. One of the movie's biggest problems is the amount of villains. Jamie Foxx as Electro was entertaining and had some development, though a bit underused.
Once the Spiderman and Electro fight ends, the Green Goblin swoops in to set up for another movie. And then the Rhino comes in, and is completely forgettable, and Giamatti does a poor job. And their fight scene is CUT OFF! The movie is 20 minutes too long, never knowing quite when to wrap things up.
There is also too much going on, and feels like two movies in one. I couldn't help but feel like I had watched Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 3 mixed together, it makes the film feel incoherent. This Spiderman movie just gets got up in all of its plot threads, or should I say webs.
It has some good actors, nice action, and some cool villains/scenes. As a movie though, it has really bad writing, directing, and a grab bag of random ideas that are shoehorned into its story. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gets 2/5 stars (C-).
