Review of The Air I Breathe (2007) by Kim E — 16 Jul 2009
The Air I Breathe.
The first thing that you notice, even from looking at the trailer or the cover of the DVD is the cast, how can you not notice it?! Okay so theres a few has-beens a la Sarah Michelle Gellar and one or two 'never weres' such as Brendan Fraser, no matter what anyone says... The guy can't act. But then you have up-and-coming Emile Hirsch who was funny and brought a bit of charm to the film. Not to mention the likes of Forrest Whitaker, Kevin Bacon and Andy Garcia who always put on a performance. So, it's a mixed cast but don't let that put you off. In the end they are all entertaining in their own way and there seems to be a good chemistry between them so it's all good.
As for the plot, it's based on an old proverb categorising life into: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love. It's all done in stages but it's all intertwined in little ways and it's nice to see the film finish where it started.
The script isn't too solid as far as dialogue goes, it's fairly basic and easy to read through, which, I suppose is helpful for those such as Brendan Fraser. But the filming of the movie is done with a certain grit and is shot and peiced together nicely, and it shows. As for the film itself it's simple to follow and very entertaining. It's the sort of 'big name cast meets hard hitting film' scenaria which has been done over and over and in most cases, fail miserably. It's safe to say; The Air I Breathe is going to be like Marmite; you either love it or hate it.
