Review of The Air I Breathe (2007) by Jonathan M — 20 Feb 2010
While watching this movie you may feel like you have seen it before. And there are parts that you probably have; movies like the Oscar-winning Crash come to mind. But that aside, this is a decent film with an all-star cast lead b y Andy Garcia and Kevin Bacon.
It takes the lives of a handful of individuals and connects them all using an ancient proverb involving different emotions. Now, not all the stories are the best but the couple of weak points that do exist don't completely deter the film.
The faults include 1) not using Kevin Bacon to his fullest potential, 2) the what-I-thought-to-be-cheesy connection from Forest Whitaker to Sarah Michelle Gellar, and 3) that use of Gellar at all. Some things I like her in, and some projects she just doesn't seem to fit.
This would be one of those latter projects. Those complaints aside, Garcia and Fraser are very good together and on their own. They have the best lines and the best storylines in the movie. Whitaker is good too but he seemed to quick.
He is there and then his tale is done. Too fast. But that is more an issue with the direction of the film than the acting or writing. I think you will enjoy this film as long as you don't think too hard about it and just enjoy the story it provides.
It is a good ride.
