Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Adam Z — 16 Sep 2007
I'm not a huge fan of period costume dramas, but this was one I had to get around to eventually, being a film by one of my favourite directors. I struggled as much as expected with the dialogue, but there is plenty to admire here, especially the cinematography, which creates an absolutely beautiful aura around the movie.
As for the plot itself, it is a very cold piece, whereupon the 'mobsters' work using pomp and etiquette rather than guns and violence. The central performances are superb, and especially good is Miriam Margolyes in her matriarchal role.
Enjoyable Sunday afternoon fare, but not one I could return to in a hurry.
