Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Silvia C — 14 Jan 2008
Scorsese in a departure from his more traditional genre pieces has made a big, intelligent movie about how conformity can stifle honesty and love whereas acting in mere self-interest can be even more destructive.
Day-Lewis is as brilliant as ever as Newland, a role that demanded he be passionate but restrained, and Michelle Pfeiffer is glorious and energetic as Ellen. A young Winona Ryder gives one of her best performances as the ultimate seemingly innocent but calculated well-mannered lady to round off an excellent cast and movie.
