Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Jared P — 02 Oct 2008
This was the first Scorsese movie I'd ever seen, so I did not have the experience that many people had of seeing a film that fell outside the normal scope of his "oeuvre." This is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen as well as one of the subtlest.
So much is implied instead of spoken. Unusual for a movie about marital infidelity, there is no sex. Instead, the couple's lust is expressed through glances, a few kisses, an unbuttoning of a glove, and other small signals.
It takes patience to watch if you're used to action-packed films, but if you don't mind costume drama and dialogue where everyone is saying one thing and thinking another, watch this.
