Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by B C — 08 Nov 2009
The Age of Innocence is an expertly designed drama about suffocated romance in which Scorsese demonstrates his ability to restrain. Unfortunately, I have little interest in restrained Scorsese. Watching him save up his most striking angles and camera movements for moments of conversational intensity is impressive, commendable, but boring.
The ellegance of the set and costume design is captivating, but the subtle drama of the conflict simply is not. Not even the magic of the performances could completey engage me in the complex plot. However the story is wonderfully written and enjoyable on its literary plain.
Plus the fluidity and finesse of the artistry is in itself entertaining as a departure from Scorsese's more vicious stylings. It's unique, at least.
