Review of The African Queen (1952) by Emma D — 30 Aug 2008
The only film Bogart won an Oscar for (yes he even lost for Casablanca), and really deserve it here. Bogart and Hepburn star in a film about love and patriotism. After the village Hepburn has been working in is burned down by the Germans (WW1) Hepburn leaves down the river in Central Africa with Bogart (Charlie). Along the way they hit rapids, gunfire, leeches, mosquitoes, mud, more Germans and, of course, love.
The acting is some of the best ever put on screen in the 50's, Hepburn said she received her greatest direction on the set of this film. The cinematography is fabulous, but it is hard to have bad shooting with this scenery, and the script is magnificent, the score is a little weak but that is of little importance. This is very good and it is a horrid disgrace it cannot be found legally in the USA.
