It's hard to overestimate how wonderfully well conceived the story and characters are. The locations and backbone of the story take you on a journey that sees our characters, from disparate backgrounds, to a common cause and goal.
To have the audience actually come to care about the boat itself, to the point it becomes a character in it's own right, is testament to the superb craftsmanship in just about every aspect of this classic movie.
