Review of The African Queen (1952) by Kevin R — 12 Dec 2012
A good shepherd doesn't desert his flock when a wolf is prowling.
In Africa during World War 1 a gin swindler and residential mail man informs a local missionary, lead by an English brother and sister, about the German's beginning the first World War. Shortly after their discussion, the Germans invade the area killing the villagers and brother. The gin swindler feels bad for the sister and agrees to help her destroy a German vessel using his boat.
"What an absurd idea? Lady, you have ten absurd ideas to my one.".
John Huston, director of The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madrid, The Man Who Would be King, Annie, Chinatown (1974), and Casino Royale (1967), delivers African Queen. The storyline for this picture is very good and well thought out. There are quite a few scenes that are a stretch but remain fun to watch unfold. The acting is awesome and the cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Robert Morley, Peter Bull, and Theodore Bikel.
"I should hang you twice I think.".
I recently watched this picture on Netflix since this was another Humphrey Bogart gem I had never seen. I am a huge fan of both Bogart and Hepburn and found there back and forth wonderful. The storyline definitely seemed unrealistic but fun to watch each character drive the other throughout the film. I recommend seeing this picture but it may not be your favorite Bogart or Hepburn picture.
"I'll parish without some hair of the dog.".
Grade: B+.
