Review of The Affair of the Necklace (2001) by Evelyn M — 21 Oct 2007
Appallingly bad. For all their oscars, Hilary Swank and Adrien Brody still struggle with the British accent. What makes this particularly ludicrious is that the movie is set in France. Why is it that whenever American actors do accents other than their own in a setting outside of the modern era, that they always choose to do a British one? Did 18th century french people speak with British accents? I'm pretty sure they didn't.
It's as if people automatically assume that a British accent will give them clout and gravitas and (fingers crossed) critical recognition. This is a delusion and it pisses me off to no end. Nonetheless, the costumes in this, were glorious.
