Review of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) by Matthew D — 24 Oct 2018

A joyous childhood favorite.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) is a classic in Disney's history of animated. The bright colors, quaint designs, detailed backgrounds, beautiful direction, and swift storytelling make these 2 tales quite fun. I love the hand drawn animation of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. It's still looks good almost a century later.

Unfortunately, as charming as this double film is and how quickly paced it is, the animation has some odd choices and lack of detail in the characters themselves. These designs are not as memorable as later Disney classics. Ichabod is based on a Crane, which fits the character, but he looks so gross and creepy. Mr. Toad is adorable, but some of the other animals are pretty basic in appearance. I still love this movie, but it looks dated in design, not the actual fluid animation style.

The music from Oliver Wallace is absolutely lovely and memorable. The Mr. Toad tunes are so brisk and charming. The Ichabod songs are iconic and catchy. Bing Crosby's voice is so deep and soothing as you listen to the Ichabod soundtrack.

I must mention the excellent narration of these 2 animated films. Basil Rathbone's distinct voice lends itself to a more regal in tone. Rathbone makes Mr. Toad's story feel like a old school British drama like The Wind in the Willows novel it is based on originally. Meanwhile, Bing Crosby's narration is so melodic and coy that you are charmed by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tale.

Overall, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is super charming and old time-y. I think kids and families alike will still enjoy this movie. Check it out. It's really neat for Fall and Halloween time each year.
