Review of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) by Jon T — 26 Jul 2008
THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD was the last of the Disney anthologies from the late 1940's and is certainly the best of them. As with FUN AND FANCY FREE, this movie is two half-hour featurettes in one film.
The first is a somewhat loose but lively retelling of Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows", narrated by Basil Rathbone. The second, and arguably the best, featurette is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", delivered by Bing Crosby.
The latter sequence in particular is highlighted by a frighteningly spooky climax. Both featurettes play better on their own than they do in this feature, but as this film's debut to the video market has been long overdue, Disney collectors shouldn't mind.
