Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Kyle G — 13 May 2012
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is awkward, odd, fantastical, mythological, humourous, entertaining, and invariably Pythonesque - all of the kinds of adjectives one might expect from director Terry Gilliam.
Gilliam has crafted a film that chronicles the journey of the naively inviting Baron Munchausen and his comrades in an inventive, intuitive, imaginative way, much like Gilliam's later film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
The movie does have its flaws - some scenes are a bit esoteric and could have been edited for length (such as the moon scene) and some of the characters are perhaps a little too overwhelming at times - but the flaws do not outweigh its enjoyable triumphs.
Gilliam has made Munchausen's outlandish tales an enjoyable journey for anyone who wants to escape their everyday lives.
