Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Michael W — 09 Oct 2012
While audiences in 1989 were busy establishing Tim Burton's rather mediocre "Batman" as the box office juggernaut we remember, it's confounding to think that this film made less than one fifth of its production budget--look at what they were missing! I often say there's more imagination to find in one Terry Gilliam film than just about everything else you'll see from Hollywood in a year, and perhaps no film greater exemplifies this than "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.
" This is a marvelous, rare kind of jewel that offers the perfect blend of imaginative visuals, lush cinematography, delightfully comedic performances, grown-up themes, and youthful, energetic fun.
It's simply a work of art and in the highest tier of entertainment for all ages.
