Review of The Adjustment Bureau (2011) by Scott L — 30 Oct 2012
Everyone's taste is different, I understand that. But I have a hard time understanding how this movie gets such a poor rating. I've seen it about 10 times and I think it's brilliant on just about every level.
As everyone has mentioned, the chemistry between the lead actors is genuine and really drives the story. But the story, the tone, the sound track all work very well. David Norris's loneliness and grief, and the soothing of that grief are palpable.
In the end it's an uplifting story but with a very powerful undertone of grief, loss, and loneliness. There is a deep story of the human condition that is at the same time painful and hopeful. Without being dogmatic, it uses the notion of something greater than ourselves that guides us but doesn't discount our participation.
The story is based on a Phillip K. Dick short story and his personality comes through without being overwhelming.
