Review of The Addams Family (2019) by Ryanecho — 14 Jan 2021
The Addams Family (2019) is the bare-bones of what qualifies as an Animated Theatrical Film. It's animated well enough, the lighting is decent and looks fine. The problem is the character designs themselves everything has a very generic sort of feel to it. There is no detail besides the very basic makeup on the female characters.
I could see the Assville residents (or whatever the town was called) be in any other movie. The character designs that aren't generic looking are very ugly Parker for example, not even an Addams, is probably the ugliest character in this movie.
The movie features two very generic plots. The A Plot is about a rebellious teen girl wanting to go against her mom. Actually we see this twice, once played normally and the other played in reverse. For example Wednesday starts acting normal and wearing pink to her mother's dismay.
The B Plot is about a boy learning a recidal/sport and his dad thinking he won't be able to do it and be embarrassed. This plot is actually BARELY touched on as we never see them train (besides him failing once). It's mostly just the dad being worried, and then the son overhearing his dad think he will embarrass himself. No "I'm gonna make my dad proud/prove him wrong" montage of him training and becoming better. We do see him be sad for a few seconds during a song played on the piano by Lurch. By the way the piano scenes happen a few times and randomly throughout the movie. No real prompt or anything. In fact time wise Lurch playing the piano could probably even be considered the C Plot. Ironically even it is just music it probably is the best part of the movie. I recently watched Soul and Lurch is not even in the same ballpark as Joe, but the music in general is the best part of the movie.
The movie being separated in two plots and the piano interrupting makes it feel as though it is a pilot for a sitcom rather than an actual movie. It's weird though because the movie literally feels like it's missing scenes at some point. For example at the end the villian gets fired from being an on tv house sellswomen and being disgusted by a character that was hitting on her, then in the next scene the two are now a couple and selling houses together? Another example is that the townsfolk go from wanting to kill the Addams because they think they are monsters. Then they pull a 360 calling the Addams "not monsters, just a family" even though the Addams didn't actually do or say anything to prove they weren't monsters? There's a bunch of other examples I could into as well, but you get the point. Both plots even try having a moral but neither makes sense with the plot and come completely out of nowhere.
I can't say I would recommend this movie but more than likely if you wanted to see it you already did. On the positive note even though I didn't enjoy, my mom did enjoy it. So maybe you will as well if you decide checking it out.
P.S. The Addams Family theme song instrumentally is played like eight times and is sung two more times, which in my opinion is pretty overkill. I forgot to mention that someone on the movie's staff had to of had a foot fetish.
