Review of The Act of Killing (2012) by Paul B — 07 Jul 2014
Extraordinary and chilling documentary. It focuses upon the torture and execution of 'communists' that occurred in Indonesia during the early sixties. Celebrated Indonesian 'gangsters', originally black market cinema ticket touts, proudly describe how they engaged in extortion and led death squads. They do so partially under the pretext of making a movie which celebrates their favourite American film genres.
The lead role is undertaken by Anwar Congo who was personally responsible for the brutal killing of over 1000 people.
A disturbing movie but very well made and essential viewing.
