Review of The Accidental Tourist (1988) by Clay K — 02 Jun 2008
I rewatched this movie for about the 12th time recently and came to love it again.
To me this is a movie about how life can take very unexpected turns; a path well developed and well defined can suddenly be completely changed. It is also ultimately about how finding one's way back into life can come in equally unexpected ways.
The Anne Tyler novel is one of my favorite books so when it came around as a movie I was of course skeptical; but this adaptation is remarkably faithful to the book. It now stands alongside of "The Razor's Edge", "Mediterraneo" and "Cinema Paradiso" as a movie that I watch over and over again and am touched by every time. It reminds me to be open to unexpected change and know that life is a journey as opposed to a destination.
In the end Macon leaves his carefully planned and packed suitcase on the road in order to finally strive ahead and beyond the tragedy that has mired him in the Leary groove. A place he may have stayed if not for the unexpected events in his life.
