Would that I had watched "The Abyss" before watching "Avatar" - I might have had a better idea of what I was getting myself in to before seeing the latter gobsmacking tripe-fest.

Extrapolating from James Cameron's earlier "Aliens," "Abyss" follows the adventures of a ragtag group of underwater oil rig operators - and their leader's cunt wife (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) - as they attempt to salvage the compromising cargo on a sunken U.S. nuclear submarine. They are routinely hamstrung by Navy SEAL leader Coffey (an enjoyably OTT Michael Biehn), slowly going insane from High Pressure Nervous Syndrome.

Unfortunately, like any movie rife with unbearable dii ex machina, "The Abyss" decides to incorporate aliens into the heroes' unlikely salvation from their unfortunate predicament. Twice. And I thought the CPR-revival-after-10-minutes-of-no-pulse scene was irksome.
