Review of The Abyss (1989) by Jonathan B — 27 Oct 2010
Forget Avatar this is Cameron at his best The Abyss has always been the lesser known of his films never getting mentioned among his films like the over rated True Lies. The Abyss never was fully realized when it was made mainly cause of the studios pressure to finish the troubled production which went over budget and over time.
Not a lot of people understood this science fiction epic back in 1989 which was a pity due to the finished cut which James Cameron didnt want to release. Sadly by the time of the release of The directors extended cut a few years later the film never really was shown to a huge audience thus making this brilliant directors cut forgotten and left behind and the one never mentioned of Cameron's films.
This has so much in it a great cast led by Ed Harris of very likable characters & great moments and the film brings a message to humans to treat our planet with respect and to put away our weapons of destruction which may sound corny but it is a subject we are dealing with today.
Fantastic effects for its time The Abyss started the CGI revolution which we see everywhere today on movies. This film shows the brilliance of James Cameron as a story teller and a film maker.
