(1989) The Abyss.
SCIENCE- FICTION.
When announcement of Cameron making this film was exposed, another company tried to capitalize on that by releasing an action or horror deep sea diving film before the arrival of this one called "Leviathan" starring Peter Weller released in March, 6 months before the release of "The Abyss" that was eventually released in August of 1989! Except Leviathan's theme had already been done before and "The Abyss" was somewhat of an original involving aliens habiting underwater! And the special effects was top notch quality which was used again for "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" released in 1991 for the Terminator T-1000 because of the 'watery liquid transformations' for the character! It's used effectively in this film which was used again on "Terminator 2" because it's cast works with the special 'watery effects' as a rapport rather than something that someone would see that they could run away from making it all the more credible! Basic theme taken part from an ET Spielberg movie and "The Day The Earth Stood Still" which the story centers on it's humanity of nuclear warheads! Although, the only thing wrong with this film is the Michael Bien character which is an one- note performance!
My rating may change since the only version I saw is this shortened theatrical version and have yet to see this long version which I have read is supposed to be better than this one called the 'directors cut'!
