Review of The Abyss (1989) by Dan A — 26 Sep 2014
It's surprisingly better than what to expect from a James Cameron film before he released "Avatar" as his best masterpiece yet. There's a warmth during the second half, filled with nice spirits where you'll get a nice relief after some gripping moments throughout (and few thrills maybe) and soon find out that the spirits comes from a hidden heart. Besides that substance, the typical style of effects James Cameron frequently use in his films are really good, with amazement near to the end like he'd followed the meaning of saving the best for last - with both style and substance. Those two traits that Cameron used in this film was his preparation for his future films: visual effects for both "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Avatar," and the ocean adventure scale for "Titanic.".
But besides those fillings, Ed Harris probably performed his best in this film while following the good characterizations the film has.
I would someday like to watch the special edition where there's more to this story (similar to "The Lord of the Ring" movies).
With the style of the visuals and substance of heart, spirit and thrills, "The Abyss" is surprisingly Cameron's second best. (A-).
(Full review coming soon - with better structure probably).
