Review of The Abyss (1989) by Ritchie G — 06 Nov 2009
Oh the glory of 20th Century Sci-Fi! Visually arresting, terrifyingly gripping, purely epic, this is Deep Impact + Titanic + Close Encounters of the Third Kind + Hunt for Red October and more!
James "The King" Cameron's pre-Titanic underwater adventure is the greatest of its kind. The Director's cut at a whopping 2h48min is worth every single second. Alan Silvestri's music elicits goosebumps akin to entering the deep blue sea's version of Elrond's Rivendell - enchanting, wondrous in all its symphony.
Even the defining heartbreaking moment rivals Jack and Rose's immortal moment. No less too, the subliminal anti-Cold-War message. For a show 20 years ago, this shows reaches the (abyss) limitless depth of movie magic.
Now, I hope Avatar brings the world closer to Cinema Heaven....
