Review of The ABCs of Death (2013) by Lo M — 20 Jun 2013
Quite possibly the most underrated anthology film around. Viewers who are not familiar with all of the subgenres mixed in this compilation will leave confused, disgusted, and asking the ignorant question of, "Was this supposed to be scary?".
26 directors who range from Japanese shock cinema masters, to modern Giallo expressionists, to even the popular minds behind Cartoon Network's Metalocalypse, all come together in this risky film. Some stories may have a disturbing social commentary that may go misunderstood, while others will come off as perverted filth. However, audiences should be warned to become somewhat aware of the minds behind these shorts. Many of these filmmakers have become respected in the horror genre with gorefests that not only received good buzz, but also portrayed an artist behind the camera doing what artists do best. Do not criticize a film for being simplistic, when it is your lack of knowledge of the background that leaves you with a sense of confusion in the first place.
The ABCs of Death is not only a blast to experience, but it is also an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you queasy, disturbed, excited, and even chuckled out. I encourage all curious minds and genre fans alike to be aware of the past films that got these directors in this project together in the first place. Not only will it give you a better understanding of each short, but you will also notice each director's signature touch/style before the credit is even revealed. For everyother shmuck who plans on going in blind - be warned: This is NOT for the squeamish.
