Review of The ABCs of Death (2013) by Bill M — 28 Jul 2013
Wow, I just dont know, this is a mess, the very definition of a mixed bag, The ABC's Of Death is the most ambitious horror anthology ever made, 26 short films from directors around the world both amateur and professional comprising each letter of the alphabet with the individual letters relating to different causes of death in the stories, it's admirable, fascinating and all over the fucking place, the quality ranges from highs to extreme lows, only 3 are real standouts, about six are truly decent and interesting, the rest are either utterly mediocre or as is the case with F is for fart, M is for miscarriage and K is for klutz, truly awful, also some a truly bafflingly odd, and one or two dial the extreme content up to way too tasteless, somewhat unwatchable levels, and most are filled with purile vulgarity that will put off many.
Also the production of the entries sea-saws from sharply made to extremely amateur, the top standouts are D is for dogfight, U is for unearthed and T is for toilet, a hilarious stop motion gore fest from Lee Hardcastle.
The real problem here is quality control, too many shorts are complete duds and after six or seven bad ones in a row, your enthusiasm begins to wane. But I have to give it props, this is a genuinely creative and brave endever, and it's also truly no holds barred hardcore in a way I haven't witnessed in a while, this isnt safe and glossy, this is dirty and nasty, this is the first film in a long time that has made me cover my eyes for fear of what horrific things are about to be shoved in my face, there's an unpredictability and an anything goes level of graphic depravity that is a bit exciting in these processed days of horror movies, it feel wrong, bad for you, unsafe, it's a failiare then but one with much merit to watch on a drunken night with friends who have a depraved sense of humor and a tollerance for gallons of gore.
