Review of The Abandoned (2006) by Simon D — 24 Nov 2008
In spite of its pretensions, it's not a very smart film. While it pretends to emphasize suspense and mystery over "horror", early on the film resorts to some conventional horror film devices to provoke cheap thrills from the audience--always a bad sign. The plot turns out to be so transparent that the climatic "twist" is given away about 40 minutes into the story. There are many loopholes that the story never bothers to shore up because apparently, the director doesn't feel this film needs to conform to things like "narrative logic." The dialogue is sketchy, the acting is sub-par, and I can only imagine that some people found the film entertaining because they just haven't seen that many good suspense/horror flicks.
Try and get out a bit.
