Review of The Abandoned (2006) by Melanie-Ann D — 28 Dec 2010
"The abandoned" works on so many levels. As a horror, it's suspenseful, spooky, eerie and creepy. The use of sound-effects, the whispers, voices and screams add to the jump-factor and the sound-track is superb.
The acting is top-notch for two relatively unknown actors. The script is above-average for this type of film and the special effects creepily effective. The use of the Russian countryside as a backdrop is brilliant, clearly nothing much has changed in 40 years.
The best thing about "The abandoned" for me, is that its an adult film, there are no good-looking teeny-boppers running around screaming with their bosoms heaving attractively. The female lead is solidly forty, wears sensible shoes and isn't terribly attractive.
The male lead wears his forty years well though, but suffers from middle-age spread which is refreshingly plausible. Kudos to the script-writer, director and casting-director. "The abandoned" is one of the scariest films I've seen and the ending is not what you'd expect!
