Review of The 5th Wave (2016) by Junelkean — 29 Jun 2017
It feels like there are just as many post-apocalyptic movies based on young adult science fiction novels every year and they seem getting more and more like the same. This time, an alien invasion has occurred, and Chloe Grace Moretz plays a flirty blonde who tries to save her brother from the hands of the visitors also known as the 'Others'.
From The Hunger Games to the Divergent Series to the Maze Runner Series, the trend must come to an end with this YA novel adaptation. The 5th Wave is a fairly straightforward alien invasion movie in its first act with awesome scenes and cool shots, but as it reaches its second act, it somehow falls into a romantic movie of a person falling in love with an alien, and then a love triangle starts to spark.
The 5th Wave has a lot of potential though, because of the investing characters like Moretz, Robinson, Schreiber, Monroe and Bello. The sci-fi elements are also seen, but just like as many youth sci-fi movies, they are all pretty much the same. It lacks in visual flair and originality, nevertheless some audience would be entertained particularly YA readers and fans of the genre.
VERDICT: What started out as a cool and awesome alien invasion flick turns out into a dystopian YA sci-fi movie that we have all seen.
