Review of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. (1953) by Patricia G — 20 Apr 2010
I happened to be watching Turner Classic Movies late last night and Rainn Wilson from "The Office" was presenting some of his favorite movies. Then this strange movie came on.
..I was spellbound. I grew up in the 50's and had never seen or heard about this movie! As I watched it - it was SO surreal, the costumes, the lines, etc. - that I kept thinking, "I wonder if this is a Dr.
Seuss movie?" Turns out: Yes! And directed by Stanley Kramer, too! It apparently did not do well when first released, but when you watch it now, it's awesome. BTW, I don't know if anyone mentioned this anywhere, but Tommy Rettig who plays the lead (a young boy forced to play piano by a mean piano teacher) - was "Timmy" from Lassie television show.
Yep! I was intrigued by the "weirdness" of the movie: two characters are connected by a long, grey beard and they are identical "twins" who rollerskate everywhere (they're good, too!).
Just a very interesting movie to compare to today's movies which are so "high tech," etc. Kind of reminds me of the old "Lost in Space" TV show - the sets are quite obviously big chunks of cardboard.
But it's the "Seuss-ness" of it all that is so delightful! Not sure I loved it, but it's definitely a cult film that should be on your "must see" list. .
