Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Jake G — 20 Oct 2009
Before there was REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO and all those well-loved color classics, there was THE 39 STEPS. Made earlier in his career and in pretty bad quality B&W, this is nevertheless a timeless film. Hitch ratchets up the suspense from the very beginning, and in multiple areas. Will Donat and Carroll ever get together, or even trust each other? Will Donat clear his name from the police? And when he finds the culprit, will he survive with his life?
A brilliant film by Hitchcock, and I loved it- 10/10.
