Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Isabel F — 18 Jan 2011
I think the 1978 version and the 1935 version have been mixed together here on RT for some reason, but I'm going to write about the '35 version.
This is the movie that made me like Hitchcock. I used to want to like Hitchcock very much. I really always liked Hitch girls (the leading ladies in Hitchcock films) but I never liked his films. Psycho, North by Northwest, Birds, Rope... eh. I really tried to like them people, honest. They're just boring. And all that rear projection... ugh. I quite liked The Man who Knew Too Much, but not enough to make me a Hitchcock fan.
Then I saw The 39 Steps. It was a revelation! The story, the characters, the wit, the twist at the end. Pure perfection. It was the kind of movie I would make if someone would give me some money... seriously.
