Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Jeffrey G — 20 Jul 2011
Good but quite dated early Hitchcock classic. Follows a blueprint he would stick to for most of his career. The Robert Powell character is interesting, I love how he keeps getting shit on every time he turns to someone for help. Hitchcock seems determined to not let him off easy. It reminded me of Scorsese's After Hours in that way.
It is kind of silly that he is continuously able to escape the clutches of a handful of police throughout the film though. And why, when he handcuffs himself to that blond girl, would she not be screaming for help?
Anyway, Hitch would perfect his take on this story later in his career and make more entertaining and accomplished versions of it, but it was probably a pretty fresh faced flick at the time of its release and has enough of the good stuff to make for a fun viewing.
