Review of The 300 Spartans (1962) by Becca K — 28 Jun 2008
This film, like its modern counterpart, focused on the Battle of Thermopylae. 6400 Greek troops, led by the 300 Spartans (who eventually were the only ones left), withstood four days' assault by the roughly 2,641,610 land and sea forces of Persia under Xerxes I.
This movie is, with a few minor screw ups, very historically accurate. You will be happy to know that the Spartans wear a lot more clothes in this one. The action is not as dynamic as 300's, and features the perplexingly bloodless violence typical of 60s movies. Unfortunately, the movie fails to execute on the drama of the real event, and the battle seems less imperative than it really was.
All in all, it's a good movie. Maybe a little cheesy, but that can't hurt. Rent it, try it out. You won't be dissatisfied.
