Review of The 13th Warrior (1999) by Gabe S — 19 Nov 2008
The overall feeling of this film succeeds despite its many problems. I know it was based off a book which was supposedly great, and because it was arguably true to the story of the book I won't pass too much judgment without reading it.
However, there was still many problems with the storyline as far as the movie goes. The randomness of certain scenes are the signs of poor story telling and choices for camera-work. Stereotypical characters, a romance serving no purpose and simply ending without any closure whatsoever, the final battle being painfully typical in slow-motion (and ending too fast), and the uneven mixture between unrealistic and realistic combat in general made the fight scenes too inconsistent in quality to enjoy fully.
The acting was good enough for government work I guess but I honestly would have forgot Antonio Banderas was an arab if he hadn't kept saying Allah. Nevertheless, if you want to see a decent adventure with some decent action and a superbly done army of cannibals breathing down your neck this is a good film to watch.
